UN System Coordination for Gender Equality
The entire UN System has a role to play in achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment. Within its UN System coordination role, UN Women ensures accountability for UN work on gender equality, promotes the incorporation of gender perspectives into all UN policies and programmes, and leads progress on gender equality at the country level.
Ensuring accountability
UN Women ensures that the UN System is held accountable for its work on gender equality through inter-agency mechanisms at the global, regional and national levels. This includes developing UN System-wide accountability frameworks, such as the use of gender equality markers and the establishment of gender equality-related financial targets.
Integrating gender equality across sectors
UN Women supports the UN in integrating gender equality goals into its work across sectors. This includes prioritizing gender equality in decisions around issues such as human rights, security, governance, climate change, development financing, health and economic policies, as well as in humanitarian action and disaster risk reduction plans. Through joint programming, we drive high-impact system-wide results for women and girls.
Promoting gender equality at the country level
UN Women works with regional and country teams to ensure the UN contributes to gender equality on the ground, which is integral to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This includes convening gender equality coalitions and implementing accountability mechanisms such as the UN country team Gender Equality Scorecard.
